Garage door off track

A door that has come off its track is hanging the wrong way and is not stable. The safest thing you can do is stop using it and keep people and cars away from it until it has been looked at.

Door crooked or stuck at an angle right now? Don't press the button again and don't try to push it back. Call and tell us what you see.

What it looks like

  • The door sits crooked — one side higher than the other
  • A roller has come out of the track on one side
  • The track looks bent or pulled away from the wall
  • Grinding or scraping before the door stopped
  • The door stopped part-way and won't go up or down

What usually causes it

A cable has slipped or snapped

Door hangs lower on one side, slack cable at the drum

The lift cables hold each side of the door. When one fails, that side drops and the rollers can be pulled out of the track. More on cable repair.

Something hit the door or the track

A dent or bend in the track, often at bumper height

A car, a bin or a bike can knock the track out of line. Even a small bend can stop a roller from running.

Worn rollers or loose brackets

The door was getting noisy or shaky before it came off

Rollers wear out and track brackets can work loose. The door then drifts out of line until a roller slips out.

A broken spring

A loud bang earlier, door very heavy

Without the spring helping, the opener can drag the door out of line. More on spring repair.

Bent or damaged track

Sometimes the track itself is the problem — bent by a car or a heavy knock, or pulled out of line where the brackets have worked loose. A slightly bent section can often be straightened and re-secured; a badly kinked or split section usually needs replacing, because the rollers will keep catching at the damaged point.

A track that is slightly out of line can also show up as a door that binds, shudders or scrapes in one spot before it ever comes off — see noisy garage door.

Please don't try to fix it yourself. An off-track door can move or drop without warning, and the springs and cables are under a lot of tension. Keep everyone clear and call.

What a repair involves

A technician makes the door safe first, then finds out why it came off — a cable, a bent track, worn rollers or a spring. The track is put back in line, the rollers are seated, and anything that failed is shown to you before it's replaced. You approve the price before any work starts, and the door is tested before the technician leaves.

Most off-track doors only need a repair. If the door itself is badly bent or damaged, ask about garage door replacement — you’ll hear honestly which it is.

I originally called for what I thought would be a small repair, but I was really impressed with how professional the whole experience was. The technician arrived on time and walked me through what needed to be done before starting. Great service overall.

Common questions

Can I keep using the door if it still moves?
Please don't. Running a door that is off track can bend the track further, damage the panels or the opener, and in the worst case the door can drop.
Can I push the roller back into the track myself?
We don't recommend it. The door is not properly supported, and the springs and cables are under tension. It's safer to leave it and call.
Is an off-track door always a big repair?
Not always. Sometimes it's a roller and some track adjustment; sometimes a cable or spring has failed as well. You'll know what's wrong and the price before anything is done.
Can a bent garage door track be repaired?
Often, yes. A slightly bent section can usually be straightened and re-secured. A badly kinked or split section is normally replaced. The door has to be supported safely first, so this is a job for a technician.
