Noisy garage door
Garage doors make some noise, but a sound that’s new or getting worse usually means something is worn, dry or loose. Catching it early is often a smaller repair than waiting for something to fail.
Heard one loud bang? That’s usually a broken spring, not a noisy door — don’t run the door, see spring repair. For grinding, squeaking or rattling, call and describe the sound.
CALL NOW — (516) 687-6171What the sound usually points to
Squeaking or squealing
High-pitched, on every open and closeUsually dry rollers, hinges or springs that need the right lubricant, or rollers whose bearings are worn out.
Grinding or scraping
Rough sound, sometimes with jerky movementOften worn rollers, a track that’s out of line, or a part rubbing where it shouldn’t. If the door is also crooked or jerking, stop using it — see door off track.
Rattling or banging while it moves
Loose, clattering soundLoose hinges, brackets or track bolts. The door vibrates more over time, and the loose parts wear faster.
Noise from the opener
Grinding or straining from the motor unit on the ceilingA worn drive gear, a chain that needs adjusting, or an opener working too hard because the door is out of balance. More on opener repair.
Worn rollers
Rollers are one of the most common sources of a noisy door. Older steel rollers without bearings grind and rattle as they wear; worn nylon rollers can flatten or crack and start to thump. Signs to look for: rollers wobbling in the track, flat spots or cracks on the wheels, or a door that judders as it moves.
Replacing worn rollers usually makes a door noticeably quieter and takes strain off the opener. The bottom rollers sit in brackets that are under spring tension, so leave those to a technician. A roller that has come out of the track is a different problem — see garage door off track.
What’s safe to check
- Watch the door move and note where the sound comes from — rollers, hinges, the springs above the door or the opener.
- Look for loose bolts on the hinges and track brackets.
- Don’t adjust or loosen anything on the springs, cables or bottom brackets. Those are under high tension.
What a repair involves
A technician finds where the noise is coming from, checks the door’s balance and the parts that wear with it, and shows you what’s worn. You approve the price before any work starts, and the door is tested before the technician leaves.
